All Nkuku’s products are Eco-friendly, handmade and fairtrade. They are made using age old traditional techniques by skilled artisans in Africa and India. These skills combine extremely well with the contemporary designs, natural materials and sustainable methods of production.
Nkuku photo albums and notebooks are available in a range of different designs and sizes. All have acid free cotton fibre pages which are handmade from cotton rag left over from the clothing industry; the albums benefit from acid free interleaves and are supplied in a recycled paper cotton box which make them and ideal gift.
The leather for the albums and notebooks is all hand-dyed using tree bark and natural vegetable extracts. It is then left to dry in the sun, which brings out the lovely rich colours.

Whilst on a year travelling the world in 1989 John Ayris and Anne Spratling came across a family of highly talented artisans who were making the most charming products from paperwood and other natural materials found in and around their village. Siezing the opportunity laid before them both sides got down to some friendly bargaining, a small collection was bought, an idea sown and a promising relationship begun.
East of India was born when the Princes Trust provided a small loan in 1991.
Today those original artisans are still producing fabulous items for East of India, only now they employ other family members and friends to keep up with the demand. East of India design all their own products, producing exclusivity and a cohesive look over the whole range. All products are designed around the extensive skills of the artisans making them and are the result of the close working relationship. East of India are based in Folkestone, Kent. Their team has evolved and grown since 1991. So how and when did the idea for an online gift shop all come about?
The business was founded in 2001. At this point I sold children's gifts . The business has naturally evolved.
Where did the name Boudoir Babe originate from?
Boudoir Babe was the name of a feature article in a glossy magazine and the name stuck in my head ever since.
Do you come from retail or gift industry background?
No, but my business partner was originally in retail marketing which isn't far removed from the gift marketplace. While I'm a shopaholic with an eye for a bargain, so we make a good team.
What grabs your attention when looking for new gift ideas? I want to be excited! As a buyer, I'm looking for quirky, fun and unusual gifts that can't be found on the high street. Quality of the gifts I sell on Boudoir Babe is essential as bad quality reflects directly onto us as a business rather than the supplier.
How important is customer service?
I know everybody bangs on about the importance of good customer service, but few seem to follow through on it :-(
I'd rather be told I'm doing something wrong, so I can put things right ;-) Part of me truly believes that most online retailers don't mean to provide poor customer service but are let down by lack of understanding or haven't really given it much thought. As a customer and owner of Boudoir Babe, I feel a responsibility to look inwards at my website from a customers point of view. Is my website well signposted, are my FAQs up to date, any broken links, script problems or 404 pages?
Plans for the future? I'm passionate about gifts so I plan to visit many more gift fairs, craft fairs, gift markets, street fairs, art & craft festivals throughout the year to find innovative, quality gifts.
